AquaMats® are an innovative aquatic technology product fabricated from highly specialized synthetic substrates that are used to vastly improve water quality conditions in a host of aquatic environments from commercial aquaculture applications to wastewater system design, maintenance and operation. AquaMats® are fabricated by Meridian to provide application-specific, high surface area polymers for the production of bacteria, algae, and other types of micro fauna, which form the natural base of the aquatic food chain. Additionally, these communities also rely on carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus for growth and reproduction and are Nature’s most efficient consumers of aquatic nutrients. The net result of the product’s design is continuously regenerated algal/bacterial colonies that support, stabilize and sustain animal and plant life, while at the same time providing natural biofiltration of the water column through nutrient conversion to biomass.
The AquaMats® design is deployed vertically in the water column of lagoons or tanks. AquaMats® provide a highly engineered three-dimensional surface with approximately a 150 times advantage in effective surface area over a flat two-dimensional surface. For the microbiological community, this is a vast, cave-like maze that provides a biologically friendly area for colonization offering residence to protozoa, bacteria, nematodes, rotifers and fungi, all competing for food. What looks to the naked eye like a 6 foot long by 5 foot tall AquaMat product unit is actually a football-field size surface area in which the average pore sizes and distribution as well as the surface electrical charge all combine to enhance biological colonization.
