AQUACULTURE OVERVIEW

AquaMats® have demonstrated tremendous value in culture of crustaceans, particularly penaeid shrimp. The primary benefits and functions of AquaMats® in crustacean/shrimp culture are (1) control of soluble toxins and effluent discharge because AquaMats® perform in situ biofilitration, (2) provision of structure that allows at least 50-100% increase in stocking density with no falloff in survival, (3) natural feed to substantially reduce overall food conversion ratio values and improve immune system function.

AquaMats® have been successfully demonstrated with the following crustacean/shrimp species:

  • White shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei)
  • Tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon)
  • Western blue shrimp (Litopenaeus stylirostris)
  • Fresh water prawn (Machrobrachium rosenbergi)
  • Indian prawn (Penaeus indicus)
  • Green sea urchin (Psammechinus miliaris)
  • NW crayfish (Pacifiastacus sp.)

RESULTS TO-DATE

AquaMats® scavenge soluble inorganic nutrients from the water through periphytic bacteriological metabolism. In recirculating systems and closed ponds without water replacement, AquaMats® are capable of removing 80% of the phosphates, as well as 90% of the nitrates in 36 hours. Ammonia is also rapidly removed by aerobic bacteriological nitrification processes. The removal of these nutrients allows the stocking of even higher densities in ponds, tanks and raceways, while at the same time reducing the environmental impact of aquaculture operations.

For freshwater prawns and penaeid shrimps, AquaMats® also provide vertical structure that dramatically increases the surface area available for grazing and reduces cannabalistic predation. The increase in surface area allows at least a 50-100% increase in stocking densities. Stocking levels as high as 160 animals per square meter in 1meter deep tanks for penaeid shrimp have been achieved with very high survival rates.

With adequate nutrients and sunlight (natural or artificial), the regenerative periphyton production on the surface of AquaMats® provides a very large proportion of the feed necessary during early rearing (45 or more days) of all crustacean/shrimp species. AquaMats® continue to provide crustacean/shrimp species with an important natural food supplement throughout their life cycle.

AQUACULTURE PRODUCTS

Meridian’s line of AquaMats® for Aquaculture products largely used in the shrimp farming segment of world aquaculture. AquaMats® are a proven technology that substantially increases farm profitability in virtually all types and phases of shrimp farming (hatchery, nursery and grow out);

AquaMats® create a natural, ecologically sound tank and pond environment and habitat for shrimp. Abundant natural food and efficient utilization of the entire water column increases survival by providing essential vitamins and micro-nutrients in a highly bioavailable form, reducing stress, especially during molting, and bolstering the immune system. The result is reduced mortalities and larger numbers of healthier animals at more rapid rates of growth, enhanced conditions for high-intensity growing, and substantially increased productivity.
